The Autism Roadmap
For families with teensIs Your Teen with Autism Aging out of High School?
Transitioning to the adult word can feel scary, confusing, and overwhelming. Almost as overwhelming as when your teen first got their diagnosis.
When do I apply for SSI? Do I choose supported decision making or guardianship? I don’t mind my teen living at home for a little while, but where will they live after that? Can my teen work? Where will my teen work? They do need some supports at work, how do I get them that? My teen can barely keep their room clean, how will they keep up an apartment/dormroom/house? How do I teach them about sex? How will they make friends? Who will take care of my adult offspring when I’m gone? How do I know I’m making the right choices?
Wouldn’t it be incredible to have your own personalized guide or roadmap that will point in you in the right direction?
I know exactly how you feel. I’ve been there too.
I still remember the hitting the turbulent teen years, terrified about what would happen after high school. I felt overwhelmed at having to navigate several whole new, fragmented set of service systems.
The transition support from high school was simply not enough. Their three questions of “Where will your son live?” “What kind of job will your son have after high school?” “Does your son plan to attend college or a vocational program?” were simply not enough to address skills that were lacking in his ability to budget, write emails, get his own transportation, shop, advocate for himself in a variety of settings (with a doctor, in the community, or at community college).
But. . .the ONE thing I wish I had while sitting there, wondering what to do next, was someone who could understand what I was going through and help me develop a real transition plan that focused on the foundation skills he would need to be successful.
That’s what I’m offering you TODAY!
No more feeling overwhelmed, fear, DIY’ing it, guessing, or going it alone.
